Pacemaker vs ICD
A pacemaker treats slow heart rhythms, while an ICD additionally protects against dangerous fast rhythms. Choosing between them — or a combined device — depends on the specific rhythm disorder and the individual clinical picture.
Device Follow-Up
After implantation, regular device checks (interrogation) confirm that the device is working correctly and allow settings to be optimised over time. Structured follow-up, including remote monitoring where available, is an important part of ongoing device care.

- A pacemaker may be considered when the heart beats too slowly or pauses because of a problem with its electrical system, causing symptoms such as dizziness, fainting or fatigue. The decision is based on symptoms, ECG findings and monitoring, and is individual to each patient.
- A pacemaker mainly treats a slow heart rhythm by delivering small electrical impulses. An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) also monitors for dangerous fast rhythms and can deliver a shock to restore a normal rhythm. Some devices combine both functions.
- Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) uses a specialised device to coordinate the contraction of the heart's chambers. It may be considered for selected patients with heart failure and specific electrical conduction abnormalities to improve symptoms and heart function.
- Conduction system pacing, including left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP), aims to stimulate the heart's natural electrical pathways more directly than conventional pacing. It is a more physiological approach that may be suitable for selected patients.
